Our March wine of the month

OK, so we aren’t exactly in flip-flop territory yet, but the sun is daring to raise a smile, and things are greening up. The future looks bright with wines to match.

Its been a fun winter of food & wine matching – with the richer winter fare making for perfect pairings to big, heart-warming reds, and luxurious, buttery whites with plenty of body. But here is March, and a first nod to the fresh pickings of the year, and with it more vibrancy, freshness, and generally a slightly lighter touch to the dishes.

Like our food, our wine list goes hand-in-hand with the seasons, and whilst hardened big ol’ red wine fans will still find plenty to their liking, we have added a number of wines to reflect the springtime dishes and mood.

I am going to focus just on the one today though as I am very excited to be serving a wine made here in Darley Abbey Mills!

The English Wine Project tend to the vines of Renishaw Estate in the north of the county & have built a winery here in Darley Abbey Mills to make the wines from these magnificent old vines. It may initially seem a puzzling distance between vineyard & winery but the grapes travel far less between vineyard & winery than many wineries in Spain I have visited.

I recently tasted the inaugural white wine from this new local winery & really enjoyed it.

Keiran has crafted a very elegant white which is a bit of a gift that keeps on giving, in that it keeps offering up subtly differing aromas & flavours as the wine opens up in the glass.

‘Walled Garden White is a great wine to enjoy this spring, it has been fermented and matured in renovated French oak that delivers subtle peach, elderflower and apricot aromas and flavours, the use of oak in this way is quite unusual as many wines are aged in oak but few are fermented in barrel, this adds real texture and finesse to a wine and raises the quality. Vegan friendly and unfiltered this is an English classic, subtle, expressive and easy drinking.’ Kieron Atkinson, founder of English Wine Project

You may, or may not be aquatinted with the grape varieties in the glass here (that being 80% Magdaline Angevin, and 20% Muscat) but for those of you who enjoy the crisp, clean grassy notes of a Loire Valley Sauvignon, or a lick of the lemony, off-dry charm of a Clare Valley Riesling, or the subtly textured, fresh almond notes of a good Soave – will rejoice as the 2020 Renishaw Estate Walled Garden White (£29) tips it’s hat to all of the above together with a delicate nod to the fresh meadow florals, and creamy juiciness of a perfectly ripe Red Prince Apple that reminds you are drinking wine from much closer pastures.

It may well be pastures-new, but on this showing, I will be following what is going on at this winery over the road with a keen interest, but for now I am very happy to introduce this wine to you as a perfect appretif white, or as a lovely match to our new fish course of Butter Roasted Stone Bass, smoked haddock Fishcake, dashi Butter Sauce, sprouting broccoli & fennel or the Salmon Pastrami small plate served with dill pickes, mustard aioli and homemade rye bread.

Don’t miss out on this fantastic pairing in March! Click here to book a table.

Cheers! Andy
